CD Drivers
A CD driver is a program that allows your computer's operating system to detect and use the functions of the CD drive installed in your PC or laptop.
In most cases, advanced operating systems such as Windows Vista and Windows® 7 contain default drivers that can detect CD drives on the first instance they are connected to the machine. The operating system then installs the correct CD device driver and integrates all of the hardware and software components into a functioning system capable of operating the CD drive.

Problems With Your CD Drive
A common problem for a CD drive is when it malfunctions and fails to read the CD-R or CD-RW disc after spinning up in the CD drive tray. The problem could be mechanical in nature - possibly caused by malfunctioning hardware parts or a dirty lens that can hinder the ability of the device to read or access the storage media (CD-R, CD-RW) - however it is more likely that the error is linked to the CD device drivers installed in the computer's operating system.
The default CD drivers provided with Windows operating systems generally only offer marginal functionality for your CD drive. Often the ability to read and access data from the disc is limited by the basic Windows CD driver included in the operating system of your PC or laptop. Any of the more advanced functions, that are part of the device's original specifications, may be disabled since the driver program that enables it has not been installed or is not able to deliver the full functionality of the CD drive.
Installing CD Drivers
If you use an older version of Windows such as 95, 98, ME, NT, 2000 or XP, it is important to download the appropriate device driver from the Internet and install it before you can effectively use the CD drive. Considering that these operating systems have been branded as obsolete by Microsoft, looking for an installation disc or searching on the Microsoft website can be difficult and frustrating.
There may also be instances where using the CD driver found on the installation discs for your operating system is not enough to successfully install the device. Depending on the CD drive, you may need an updated driver directly from the website of its manufacturer as well as from Microsoft. This would also be the case if you have recently installed a new CD drive into your PC or laptop and are experiencing problems with its operation.
With the newer Windows Vista or Windows® 7 operating systems it is also possible for them to fail to detect the CD drive even when the drivers have been installed correctly. If you have upgraded your operating system or installed a new CD drive, your new CD drive may require a more sophisticated device driver for it to function properly within the Vista or Windows® 7 operating system. You will likely need to download an updated version of the CD driver compatible with both the operating system and CD drive. These drivers will likely be available on the Internet from Microsoft and the manufacturer of the CD drive.
Updating your CD drivers can be confusing and time-intensive given the many different device drivers required by each component in your PC or laptop. There are however a number of excellent driver utility programs available from the Internet which will automatically update and install the correct drivers needed by your PC or laptop. These applications save valuable time and take the confusion out of you having to manually configure your system to resolve the problem. These applications automatically search out the most current driver and install it correctly into your PC or laptop operating system.
When downloading CD drivers from the Internet, it is advisable that you pick the device driver developed by the manufacturer of your CD drive. This will allow you to install the device without errors and to make use of the proper program that will enable all of the device's features for optimum performance.
