Chipset Drivers

Chipsets are specialized chips that are an integrated part of the motherboard or expansion cards installed in modern PC and laptop computers.

Update Drivers

The phrase "chipset" most often refers to two specific chips located on the motherboard of most computers - the "north bridge" and "south bridge". This north bridge chip generally connects the computer's central processing unit (CPU) to a series of hardware devices (i.e. primary RAM and graphics controllers) to the south bridge chip. The south bridge chip in turn connects to other peripherals incorporated into the computer's motherboard. These peripherals may include, but not be limited to, the:

The chipset plays a critical role and determines system performance because it controls all of the communications between the computer processor and external devices. Chipsets are frequently designed and developed to work with a specific suite or brand of microprocessors (i.e. Sun, Apple).

Problems With Chipsets

The problem encountered most frequently with chipsets is their incompatibility with the other hardware components of the machine in which they are installed - such as video cards, sound cards, CD/DVD drives, peripheral devicesand operating systems installed in your PC or laptop computer.

Despite having the installation discs for your operating system and various hardware components associated with your computer, installing the drivers onto an incompatible chipset will still result in errors. The two most common errors include, the:

The drivers required by the various brands of chipsets are both unique to that specific brand and also the different depending on the operating system installed in the PC or laptop. Microsoft Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows® 7, MAc OS-X, Linux, and Solaris all require different chipset drivers in order for the computer to function correctly.

Downloading Chipset Drivers From the Internet

Given the wide range of computer hardware components components manufactured by ALI, AMD, Broadcom, Intel, Vidal SIS and VIA, there is an extensive suite of drivers available on the Internet to support these various chipsets. These online resources will generally allow you to manually correct most problem associated with your computer components and restore the function of your PC and/or laptop. It should be noted however that if your chipset is working improperly this represents a real risk to the ongoing viability of your PC or laptop.

Solving these hardware problems can be confusing and time-intensive. However there are a number of excellent driver utility programs available from the Internet which will automatically update and install the correct drivers needed by your PC or laptop.

These programs save valuable time and take the difficulty out of you having to manually re-configure your system to resolve the problem.

Driver utility programs automatically search out the most current driver available from the manufacturer of each hardware component in your computer and install it correctly into your PC or laptop operating system. After updating your drivers you will now be in a position to judge whether it was a driver problem or whether in fact you need to take your computer to a professional and have them evaluate the reliability of the chipset installed in your PC or laptop.

If you are experiencing problems that you believe are related to your computer's chipset you are encouraged to back up your hard drive in such case your data needs to be restored after having a new chipset installed.
