Display Drivers
A visual display unit, or monitor, is an external hardware component designed to display the images generated from the video graphics card installed in a PC or laptop. The monitor comprises the display screen (CRT or LCD), circuitry to generate and format the picture outputted from the video card, power source, network connection and usually a case of some kind.

A display driver is a program that converts the data signal from the graphics card, input devices (mouse, keyboard) and software applications installed on a PC or laptop into a form recognized by the display unit networked to the system. In most cases, display drivers differ according to the model of the monitor attached to your desktop PC or laptop as well as the operating system installed on the computer.
Display Driver Functions
Display driver functions vary according to the operating system. The program and the device handle the data differently despite the common goal of providing an exact visual representation of the user inputs.

Problems With Your Monitor
A common problem for a display unit is when the operating system or graphics card fails to recognize the display unit connected to the PC or incorporated into the laptop. The problem could be mechanical in nature - possibly caused by malfunctioning hardware parts or however it is more likely that the error is linked to the display device drivers installed in the computer's operating system.
The default display drivers provided with Windows operating systems generally only offer marginal functionality for your display unit. Often the ability of a display unit to represent user inputs and graphics is limited by the basic Windows display driver included in the operating system of your PC or laptop. Any of the more advanced functions, that are part of the device's original specifications, may be disabled since the driver program that enables it has not been installed or is not able to deliver the full functionality of the monitor - which is why many people upgrade their graphics cards and display drivers for the optimum viewing experience.
Download Display Drivers From the Internet
Since there are different operating platforms (i.e. Windows XP, Vista, UNIX, Linux) installed in each of the many brands of computers available today, the best way to minimize conflicts between the operating system and a LCD or CRT display is to download the most current driver for the display from the Internet.
The companies that develop display units usually provide an extensive online driver database that will make their products function when matched to any computer operating system. The challenge often is finding the right driver for your PC or laptop. Each display driver is different from the other, which means that you will need to select the model and series of your monitor and operating system from the list provided in order to download the correct drivers.
Given the number of monitorbrands and operating systems available today you may find it helpful to download a driver updating application. These applications automatically search out the most current driver and install it correctly into your PC or laptop operating system. Not only will this save you time but will also ensure the right driver is installed in the right location.
