DVD Drivers

A DVD driver is a program that allows your computer's operating system to detect and use the functions of the DVD drive installed in your PC or laptop.

Update Drivers

In most cases, advanced operating systems such as Windows XP and Windows Vista contain default drivers that can detect DVD drives on the first instance they are connected to the machine. The operating system then installs the correct DVD device driver and integrates all of the hardware and software components into a functioning system capable of operating the DVD drive.

Problems With Your DVD Drive

A common problem for a DVD drive is when it malfunctions and fails to read the DVD-R or DVD-RW disc after spinning up in the DVD drive tray. The problem could be mechanical in nature - possibly caused by malfunctioning hardware parts or a miss-aligned laser that can hinder the ability of the device to read or access the storage media (DVD-R, DVD-RW). However it is more likely that the error is linked to the DVD device drivers installed in the computer's operating system.

The default DVD drivers provided with Windows operating systems generally only offer marginal functionality for your DVD drive. Often the ability to read and access data from the disc is limited by the basic Windows DVD driver included in the operating system of your PC or laptop. Any of the more advanced functions, that are part of the device's original specifications, may be disabled since the driver program that enables it has not been installed or is not able to deliver the full functionality of the DVD drive.

Installing DVD Drivers

If you use an older version of Windows such as 95, 98, ME, NT or 2000, it is important to download the appropriate device driver from the Internet and install it before you can effectively use the DVD drive. Considering that these operating systems have been branded as obsolete by Microsoft, looking for an installation disc or searching on the Microsoft website can be difficult and frustrating. There may also be instances where using the DVD driver found on the installation discs for your operating system is not enough to successfully install the device. Depending on the DVD drive, you may need an updated driver directly from the website of its manufacturer as well as from Microsoft. This would also be the case if you have recently installed a new DVD drive into your PC or laptop and are experiencing problems with its operation.

With the newer Windows XP or Vista operating systems it is also possible for them to fail to detect the DVD drive even when the drivers have been installed correctly. If you have upgraded your operating system or installed a new DVD drive, your new DVD drive may require a more sophisticated device driver for it to function properly within the XP or Vista operating system. You will likely need to download an updated version of the DVD driver compatible with both the operating system and DVD drive.  These drivers will likely be available on the Internet from Microsoft and the manufacturer of the DVD drive.

Updating your DVD drivers can be confusing and time-intensive given the many different device drivers required by each component in your PC or laptop. There are however a number of excellent driver utility programs available from the Internet which will automatically update and install the correct drivers needed by your PC or laptop. These applications save valuable time and take the confusion out of you having to manually configure your system to resolve the problem. Driver utility programs automatically search out the most current driver and install it correctly into your PC or laptop operating system.

When downloading DVD drivers from the Internet, it is advisable that you pick the device driver developed by the manufacturer of your DVD drive. This will allow you to install the device without errors and to make use of the proper program that will enable all of the device's features for optimum performance.
