Keyboard Drivers
A keyboard driver is a program that converts user input data into a form recognized by the keyboard attached to the PC or integrated into the laptop. In most cases, keyboard drivers differ according to the model of the keyboard attached to your desktop PC or laptop and according to the computer's operating system.

The main function of a keyboard driver is to allow you to type and execute the functions needed to operate your PC or laptop. Based on the commands you input through the keyboard, the operating system and installed software applications will carry-out the appropriate action. For example, typing on the keyboard will cause the keyboard driver to convert the command into data recognized by the operating system and the application you are using (i.e. MS Word, TextPad.
Keyboard Driver Functions
Keyboard driver functions vary according to the operating system. The program and the device handle the data differently despite the common goal of replicating your exact selections or commands on the keyboard.
In most cases, advanced operating systems such as Windows XP and Windows Vista contain default drivers that can detect a keyboard on the first instance they are connected to the machine. The operating system then installs the correct keyboard device driver which enables you to interact with the computer.
Problems With Your Keyboard
A common problem for a keyboard is when the operating system fails to recognize the keyboard or does not accurately replicate your physical movements with the keyboard. In these circumstance it is likely that the error is linked to the keyboard device driver installed in the computer's operating system.
The default keyboard drivers provided with Windows operating systems generally only offer marginal functionality for your keyboard. Often the ability to read and access data from the keyboard is limited by the basic Windows keyboard driver included in the operating system of your PC or laptop. Any of the more advanced functions, that are part of the device's original specifications, may be disabled since the driver program that enables it has not been installed or is not able to deliver the full functionality of the keyboard. This would most certainly be the case if you replaced the original keyboard with a wireless model.
Downloading And Installing Keyboard Drivers
If you use an older version of Windows such as 95, 98, ME, NT or 2000, it is important to install the appropriate device driver before you can effectively use the keyboard.
Since there are different operating platforms (i.e. Windows XP, Vista, UNIX, Linux) installed in each of the many brands of computers available today, the best way to minimize conflicts between the operating system and a keyboard is to download the most current driver for the keyboard from the Internet.
The companies that develop keyboards and other peripheral devices usually provide an extensive online driver database that will make their products function when matched to any computer operating system. The challenge often is finding the right driver for your PC or laptop. Each keyboard driver is different from the other, which means that you will need to select the model and series of your keyboard and operating system from the list provided in order to download the correct drivers.
Given the number of keyboard brands and operating systems available today you may find it helpful to download a driver updating application. These applications automatically search out the most current driver and install it correctly into your PC or laptop operating system. Not only will this save you time but will also ensure the right driver is installed in the right location.
