Motherboard Drivers
A motherboard is the physical printed circuit board that serves as the base platform for modern PCs and laptops. The term "motherboard" is virtually interchangeable with other terms such as "mainboard", "system board", or, "logic board".

A motherboard provides for all of the necessary physical and electronic connections the other components of the computer system including:
- main memory (RAM)
- microprocessor
- hard drive
- chipset
- read only memory (ROM)
- system clock
- expansion slots (PCI)
- power supply
State-of-the art motherboards now support many on-board peripheral that were once considered "add-ons" or peripheral components (such as sound cards, or graphics accelerator cards). Most higher quality motherboards now include a nice combination of on board features as well as several expansion slots to allow the addition of high performance components.
Generally speaking you can expect a standard motherboard to include:
- floppy disk controllers
- 2 or more PATA drivers
- 6 or mor SATA drivers
- graphics controller (2-D and 3-D)
- VGA and TV tuner output
- 8-channel integrated sound card
- ethernet network connection
- multiple USB ports

Problems With Motherboards
The problem encountered most frequently with motherboards is their incompatibility with the other hardware components of the machine in which they are installed - such as video cards, sound cards, CD/DVD drives, peripheral devices and operating systems installed in your PC or laptop computer.
Despite having the installation discs for your operating system and various hardware components associated with your computer, installing the drivers onto an incompatible motherboard will still result in errors. The two most common errors include, the:
- device cannot be detected in the system
- device driver is incompatible with the other hardware components of the computer
The drivers required by the various brandsof motherboards are both unique to that specific brand and also the different depending on the operating system installed in the PC or laptop. Microsoft Windows XP, Windows Vista, Mac, Linux, and Solaris all require different motherboard drivers in order for the computer to function correctly.
Downloading Motherboard Drivers From the Internet
Given the wide range of computer hardware components components manufactured today, there is an extensive suite of drivers available on the Internet to support these various motherboards. These online resources will generally allow you to manually correct most problem associated with your computer components and restore the function of your PC and/or laptop. It should be noted however that if your motherboard is working improperly this represents a real risk to the ongoing viability of your PC or laptop.
Solving these hardware problems can be confusing and time-intensive. However there are a number of excellent driver utility programs available from the Internet which will automatically update and install the correct drivers needed by your PC or laptop. These programs save valuable time and take the difficulty out of you having to manually re-configure your system to resolve the problem.
Driver utility programs automatically search out the most current driver available from the manufacturer of each hardware component in your computer and install it correctly into your PC or laptop operating system. After updating your drivers you will now be in a position to judge whether it was a driver problem or whether in fact you need to take your computer to a professional and have them evaluate the reliability of the motherboard installed in your PC or laptop. If you are experiencing problems that you believe are related to your computer's motherboard you are encouraged to back up your hard drive in such case your data needs to be restored after having a new motherboard installed.
