Printer Drivers

A printer driver is a program that converts data from software applications installed on a PC or laptop into a form recognized by the printer networked to the system. In most cases, printer drivers differ according to the model of the printer attached to your desktop PC or laptop and according to the computer's operating system.

Update Drivers

The main function of a printer driver is to allow software applications (i.e. Adobe Photoshop, MS word, MS PowerPoint, Corel) access to all of the functional feature of the printer. Based on the command you ask the software application to execute (for example, "print 5 colour copies") the application will forward the request to the printer driver, and the driver will convert the command into data recognized by the printer - which then prints out your document.

Printer Driver Functions

Printer driver functions vary according to the operating system. The program and the device handle the data differently despite the common goal of printers to provide an exact copy of every  page.

Printer drivers for Windows operating systems use a standard API to draw text and images into paper. The result is still impossible to predict, and some errors will usually occur despite the availability of Win32 APIs that allow the application to directly use the function of the printer without using its respective drivers.

Common Printer Driver Problems

Printer device drivers are an essential part of your computer's well-being. If your printer drivers aren't working, or they are out of date, your printer could malfunction, or operate poorly, and your PC or laptop will likely slow down as well.

The overall performance of your computer will likely decrease because the operating system either can't find the printer (even if it is online) or the specific software application from which you are attempting to print (i.e. MS Word) can't "see" the printer. In some cases you may also find that the quality of what the printer does print is rather poor - all of these problems are most oftem the result of outdated or incompatible printer drivers.

Fortunately the solution is a relatively easy fix - precluding any mechanical problems with the printer or its connection to the computer - and that is to update and install the most current set of the printer drivers available for your operating system and printer.

Download Printer Drivers From the Internet

Since there are different operating platforms (i.e. Windows XP, Vista, UNIX, Linux) installed in each of the many brands of computers available today, the best way to minimize conflicts between the operating system and a printing device is to download the most current driver for the printer from the Internet.

The companies that develop printers usually provide an extensive online printer driver database that will make their products function when match to any computer operating system. The challenge often is finding the right driver for your PC or laptop. Each printer driver is different from the other, which means that you will need to select the model and series of your printer and operating system from the list provided in order to download the correct drivers.

Given the number of printer brands and operating systems available today you may find it helpful to download a driver updating application. These applications automatically search out the most current driver and install it correctly into your PC or laptop operating system. Not only will this save you time but will also ensure the right driver is installed in the right location.
