Scanner Drivers
A scanner driver is a program that converts data from software applications installed on a PC or laptop into a form recognized by the scanner networked to the Windows operating system. In most cases, scanner drivers differ according to the model of the scanner attached to your desktop PC or laptop as well as the operating system (e.g. Windows XP, Vista, Windows® 7 and Linux) installed on the computer.

The main function of a scanner driver is to allow software applications (i.e. Adobe Photoshop, HP Scanner Suite) access to all of the functional feature of the scanner. Based on the command you ask the software application to execute (for example, "scan this photo") the application will forward the request to the scanner driver, and the driver will convert the command into data recognized by the scanner - which then scans your photo or document.
Scanner Driver Functions
Scanner driver functions vary according to the operating system. The program and the device handle the data differently despite the common goal of scanning to provide an exact electronic representation of the hardcopy information scanned.
Download Scanner Drivers From the Internet
Since there are different operating platforms (e.g. Windows XP, Vista, Windows® 7 and Linux) installed in each of the many brands of computers available today, the best way to minimize conflicts between the operating system and a scanner is to download the most current driver for the scanner from the Internet.
The companies that develop scanner usually provide an extensive online driver database that will make their products function when matched to any computer operating system. The challenge often is finding the right driver for your PC or laptop. Each scanner driver is different from the other, which means that you will need to select the model and series of your scanner and operating system in order to download the correct drivers.
Given the number of scanner brands and operating systems available today you may find it helpful to download a driver updating application. These applications automatically search out the most current manufacturer driver and install it correctly into your PC or laptop operating system. Not only will this save you time but will also ensure the right driver is installed in the right location.
