USB Drive Drivers
A USB (universal serial bus) flash drive consists of a flash memory data storage device integrated with a USB interface. USB flash drives are removable and rewritable, with storage capacity ranging from 64 MB to 32 GB.

USB flash drives are compact, operate at high speed, hold a significant amount of data and operate with a great deal of reliability due to their solid state construction. These drives are universally supported by the current Windows, Mac OS X, Linux, and other Unix-like operating systems.
Primary USB Drive Components
In most cases a USB drive is comprise of the following components:
- Male type-A USB connector - provides an interface to the host computer.
- USB mass storage controller - implements the USB host controller.
- NAND flash memory chip - stores data.
- Crystal oscillator - produces the device's main 12 MHz clock signal and controls the device's data output.
USB Drive Uses
USB drives have a wide range of application - including the following:
- Application loaders
- Audio players (I-pod Shuffle)
- Operating systems boot-up (boot-up installer instead of CD/DVD)
- Computer repair (back-up devices)
- Music storage (for home or portable use)
- Personal data mobility device (documents, pictures and videos)
- Secure data and application storage (encrypted backup)
- Windows ReadyBoost (operating system memory expansion)
USB Drivers
A USB drive driver is a program that allows your computer's operating system to detect and use the functions of the USB drive when it is inserted into the USB port of your PC or laptop. In most cases, advanced operating systems such as Windows Vista or Windows® 7 contain default drivers that can detect USB drives on the first instance they are connected to the machine. The operating system then installs the correct USB drive device driver which enables you to transfer files to the USB drive and vice versa. However these default drivers drivers may not be fully compatilble with the USB device.
Problems With Your USB Drive
A common problem for a USB drive is when the Windows XP, Vista or Windows® 7operating system fails to recognize the USB drive or launch the onboard encryption applications. In these circumstance it is likely that the error is linked to the USB device drivers installed in the computer's operating system.
The default USB drivers provided with Windows operating systems generally only offer marginal functionality for your USB drive. Often the ability to read and access data from the USB drive is limited by the basic Windows USB driver included in the operating system of your PC or laptop. Any of the more advanced functions, that are part of the device's original specifications, may be disabled since the driver program that enables it has not been installed or is not able to deliver the full functionality of the USB drive (encryption security, executable applications etc.).
Installing USB Drive Drivers
If you use an older version of Windows such as 95, 98, ME, NT, 2000 or XP, it is important to download the appropriate device driver from the Internet and install it before you can effectively use the USB drive.
Considering that these operating systems are obsolete by Microsoft and have little to not technical support, looking for an installation disc or searching on the Microsoft website can be difficult and frustrating. Depending on the USB drive, you may need an updated driver directly from the website of its manufacturer as well as from Microsoft. This would also be the case with the more advanced USB drives now available.
The newer Windows Vista and Windows® 7 operating systems also may fail to detect the USB drive even when the drivers have been installed correctly. If you have upgraded your operating system or have a particularly advanced USB drive, your USB drive may require a more sophisticated device driver for it to function properly within the Vista and Windows® 7 operating system.
Updating USB Drive Drivers
Updating your USB drivers can be confusing and time-intensive given the many different device drivers required by each component in your PC or laptop. There are however a number of excellent driver utility programs available from the Internet which will automatically update and install the correct drivers needed by your PC or laptop. These applications save valuable time and take the confusion out of you having to manually configure your system to resolve the problem. Driver utility programs automatically search out the most current driver and install it correctly into your PC or laptop operating system.
When downloading USB drive drivers, it is advisable that you pick the device driver developed by the manufacturer of your USB drive. This will allow you to install the device without errors and to make use of the proper program that will enable all of the device's features for optimum performance.
